life's a beach: chaweng beach

best beach in samui

It can be seen as a package holiday or a stop on the backpackers’ trail, but regardless of what sort of traveler you happen to be, Chaweng Beach in Koh Samui, Thailand, is a remarkable place.

Chaweng is the most popular beach on the island due to its vast stretches of perfectly clear water and powder sand.  Hundreds of hotels and restaurants line the busy street.  Anyone who wants to spend as little as twenty U.S. dollars a night can easily find accommodation and luxury-establishment seekers will be pleased to hear the cost is a fraction of that in the west.  However, during the peak months of December to March it is very wise to have reservations and also be prepared to pay a bit more.  Lie under the palm trees in a hammock sipping on a daiquiri, take a jet ski out for a jaunt on the crystal waters, or join in on a game of beach volleyball.  If you are like me and enjoy the general ambiance of a beach with natural beauty as well as plenty of activities, this place is unrivaled.

Are you a fan of nightlife?  I can honestly say that I have very rarely in my life had as much fun as I have had in the famous Soi Green Mango in Chaweng.  Enjoy a few draughts at beer bars or dance all night at one of the many discos; I truly feel it is impossible to not have a good time mixing with people from every country as well as the many locals that flock to this seriously popular spot.

Looking for something just a bit more famous?  It seems that nearly everyone has heard about the Full Moon Party that takes place on nearby Koh Phangan, and Samui is perfectly located for those who want to experience the party but would also like the ability to get away from it once they have seen enough.  That is what I have done and I heartily recommend others do the same.  There are many companies that offer the round-trip, full-moon party experience at a very low cost.

Unfortunately Samui (chaweng) is not as it was ....when I was there in was a lost paradise , simple bamboo huts , coconut palms in abundance, clean beaches and a few tiny bars for some booze and smooze.... then the airport came...the .huts , replaced by condo style blocks , the streets jammed with Maccas, KFC, etc .., more garbage , polluted shores, big night clubs , bigger bar scene , hey not all bad .....but alas for those that remember another time its a paradise .....lost......
